Car AC in 115-degree heat: what actually fails
Lake Havasu City is one of the hottest places in the country. An AC system here is asked to do more than the same system anywhere else, and the failures follow a predictable order.
Why it worked in April and does not in July
An air conditioning system does not produce cold. It moves heat from inside the cabin to the air outside, and it can only do that if the outside air can take it.
At 85°F, a system that has lost fifteen per cent of its refrigerant still feels fine. At 115°F, the same system has no reserve left and the air is never cold enough. Nothing changed in the car. The job got harder.
That is why spring is the right time to have it checked here, and why a system that is merely adequate in April should be treated as a fault rather than a pass.

1. Refrigerant charge. The system is sealed, so if it is low, it leaked. Common leak points are O-rings, hose crimps, the condenser and the compressor shaft seal.
2. Condenser airflow. The condenser sits at the very front and collects dust, bugs and debris. In a desert it also collects the fine grit that comes off unpaved access roads. A blocked condenser cannot reject heat, which is the entire job.
3. Cooling fans. They do the work when the vehicle is stationary. A weak or dead fan is exactly why the air goes warm at a stoplight and cold again on the move.
4. The compressor. Usually the consequence of the first three rather than a cause. A system low on refrigerant is also low on the oil that circulates with it, and a compressor starved of oil fails, sending metal debris through the system.
That progression is why the cheap repair and the expensive one are the same fault at different stages.
Car AC not cold enough? Why topping it up is renting cold air
Refrigerant is not consumed. There is no normal loss. If it needs topping up, there is a leak, and adding more without finding it means paying again in a few weeks.
Work done properly looks like this: pressure test both sides, find the leak with dye or an electronic detector, repair it, pull the system into deep vacuum to boil off moisture, then recharge by weight rather than by pressure or by feel.
The vacuum step is the one people skip and the one that matters most. Moisture inside an AC system forms acid and destroys compressors. A recharge without evacuation is a compressor replacement scheduled for later.
The cans from a parts store are worse than nothing on two counts: they routinely overfill, and the sealant in many of them contaminates recovery equipment, which is why some operators will decline to work on a system that has had one.
Reading your own symptoms
Cold moving, warm stopped. Condenser airflow or a failing fan.
Gradually weaker over weeks. A slow leak. The cheapest thing to fix if caught early.
Worked yesterday, nothing today. A large leak or an electrical fault. Stop running it.
Weak airflow at any temperature. Cabin filter or blower motor, not refrigerant. A blocked cabin filter is cheap and ignored for years.
Cold one side, warm the other. A blend door actuator. Nothing to do with refrigerant, and a frequent cause of unnecessary recharges.
Musty smell. Bacterial growth on the evaporator. Unpleasant rather than mechanical.

Why is the quote higher on my newer car? Vehicles built roughly from 2015 onward increasingly use R-1234yf refrigerant, which costs several times what R-134a does and needs its own equipment. Check the label under the bonnet.
Can I convert to the cheaper refrigerant? No. Systems are engineered for a specific one.
Is it worth fixing AC on an older vehicle? In this town, a vehicle without working air conditioning is close to unusable for four months of the year, which tends to settle the question.
When should I have it checked? April or May. A leak repair in spring is a fraction of a compressor in August, when every shop is booked out.
