Brakes are the one system where waiting has a floor. Past a certain point you are grinding metal on metal and the repair roughly doubles. The noises tell you where you are on that timeline.
What the noise means, in order of urgency
A high squeal when braking is the wear indicator and means book it soon. Grinding is metal on metal and means the pads are gone. A pulsing pedal points at rotors, and a soft or sinking pedal is hydraulic and should stop you driving.
High-pitched squeal when braking. Most pads carry a metal tab designed to contact the rotor and make exactly this noise when the friction material runs low. It is a deliberate warning, and it means weeks rather than months.
Grinding, a deep metallic scrape. The friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting into the rotor. What would have been a pad job is now pads and rotors, sometimes a caliper too.
Pulsing through the pedal. Rotors not running true, usually from uneven deposits or heat distortion. It gets worse rather than settling.
Pulling to one side. A sticking caliper or a collapsed hose. A handling problem before it is a wear problem.
Soft, spongy or sinking pedal. Air in the lines, a fluid leak or a failing master cylinder. Stop.
A squeal after rain that clears in a few stops. Surface rust. Normal.
What towing does to brakes
Braking converts motion into heat, and towing adds mass, so a tow vehicle puts far more energy into its brakes than a commuter car does. Long descents are what find weak brakes, not hard stops.
In a boat and RV town this is the dominant wear pattern, and it is the one most owners underestimate.
Weight is heat. A truck with a boat behind it is asking its brakes to absorb substantially more energy per stop, and the ambient temperature here leaves less room to shed it. Add a long descent where the driver holds the pedal down for two miles rather than selecting a lower gear, and pads and rotors cook.
Three consequences worth acting on:
- Use engine braking on descents. A lower gear, and intermittent firm braking with time to cool, rather than constant light pressure.
- Flush the brake fluid on schedule. Fluid absorbs moisture, moisture lowers the boiling point, and a boiled fluid gives you a pedal that goes to the floor on the one descent where you need it.
- Do not forget the trailer. Electric or surge brakes that are out of adjustment mean the tow vehicle is doing all the work, which is exactly how a set of pads disappears in one season.

Rotors can be reused if they measure above the manufacturer minimum and run true. Below it, or if grooved or warped, they must be replaced. Most modern rotors are too thin to resurface, which is why replacement has become standard.
Every rotor has a minimum thickness cast into it. Below that figure it cannot shed heat safely. A mechanic should measure with a micrometer rather than eyeball it, and it is fair to ask what it measured.
Resurfacing used to be routine. Modern rotors are designed lighter and thinner, and there is often not enough material to machine and still clear the minimum, so replacement is the default rather than a sales tactic.
Where the real choice sits is part quality. Cheap rotors from unknown suppliers warp early, and in this heat that happens faster. Mid-range parts from a known manufacturer are worth the difference here, particularly on anything that tows. Ask what brand is going on.
Two other things belong in the conversation. Sticking calipers cause uneven wear, so a pad job on a vehicle with a sticking caliper wears out early unless the caliper is addressed. And vehicles that sit for a season frequently have surface-rusted rotors and seized calipers that need attention before the first drive.
Doing brakes in a driveway
Brake work suits mobile service: it needs jack stands, hand tools and a torque wrench, not a lift. What it does need is firm level ground, which is worth moving the vehicle for.
A front axle takes a competent mechanic one to two hours. Both axles, an afternoon. No equipment involved needs a building.
The surface matters. Jack stands need firm level ground, and loose gravel, sand or a slope is unsafe. A mechanic who works on one anyway is telling you something about his standards.
Shade helps in summer for the obvious reason, and early mornings are the sensible slot from June to September. That is not an operator being difficult; outdoor work at 115°F has genuine limits.
Two details worth confirming: fasteners torqued to specification rather than run up with an impact gun, and vehicles with electronic parking brakes having their caliper pistons retracted with a scan tool rather than forced back. Forcing them damages the actuator.

When to stop driving
Stop for a pedal that sinks toward the floor, for a brake warning light with reduced braking, for a visible fluid leak at a wheel, or for grinding with a pull. Those are failures rather than wear.
Worn brakes and failing brakes are different problems. Wear is predictable and gives warning; failure does not.
Have it towed rather than driven if the pedal goes soft or travels further than usual, if there is a puddle of clear oily fluid near a wheel, if the brake warning light is on alongside poor braking, or if it pulls hard enough under braking to need correction at the wheel.
Squealing, mild pulsing and slightly longer stopping distances mean book it this week rather than abandon the vehicle. If you are towing, though, move that timeline up: the margin that lets a commuter car wait a fortnight does not exist with a boat behind you.
Brakes on a vehicle that sits half the year
Standing causes surface rust on rotors and can seize a caliper, especially with the parking brake applied. Light rust clears in a few stops; a seized caliper does not, and it will destroy a new set of pads.
Half the vehicles in this town spend months parked, and brakes are the system that dislikes standing the most.
Surface rust. A film forms on rotor faces within days in humid conditions and within weeks anywhere. It is cosmetic, it makes a grinding noise on the first few stops, and it clears itself. This is not a fault.
A seized caliper. A different matter. Pistons and slide pins corrode in place, and the caliper either stops applying or stops releasing. One that stops releasing drags constantly: you get heat, smell, uneven pad wear and reduced fuel economy, and a brand-new set of pads can be ruined in weeks.
The parking brake. Leaving it applied for a long storage period is the most reliable way to seize the rear brakes, particularly on drum-in-hat designs. Chock the wheels instead where it is safe to do so.
Hoses and fluid. Rubber hoses perish faster in this heat whether the vehicle moves or not, and brake fluid keeps absorbing moisture while parked.
Before the first real drive of a season, brakes deserve more than a glance: check that nothing drags when the wheels turn by hand, that the pedal is firm, and that the vehicle pulls up straight on a first gentle stop.
Trailer brakes, and the controller nobody set up
Most towables have electric brakes controlled from the tow vehicle. If the controller gain is set too low, the truck does all the braking; too high and the trailer locks up. Both are common and both are quick to correct.
This is the most under-checked safety item in a boat town, and adjusting it takes ten minutes.
An electric brake controller decides how much braking the trailer contributes. The gain has to be set for the actual loaded weight, and most people set it once, if ever, then change what they tow.
Gain too low. The tow vehicle does nearly all the work. Its pads and rotors wear out fast, stopping distances lengthen, and on a long descent the brakes overheat.
Gain too high. The trailer brakes grab, which you feel as a tug, and the trailer tyres can lock and flat-spot.
How it is set. On a quiet flat road at about 25mph, apply the manual lever alone. The trailer should slow the rig firmly without locking. Adjust and repeat until it does, and re-check whenever the load changes materially.
Also worth checking each season: that the brake magnets still work, that the wiring and ground are sound, and that the breakaway battery is charged. A breakaway system with a dead battery is decoration.
