Car won’t start in Lake Havasu City? Which of three things is wrong
Battery, alternator and starter fail differently and sound different. Ten minutes of testing separates them. Guessing is how people buy two parts to fix one fault.
Car won’t start in Lake Havasu? Telling the three apart
When a car won’t start, rapid clicking with dim lights is usually the battery. A single loud click with strong lights points at the starter. Starting fine then dying while driving, with the battery light on, is the alternator.
Before anyone opens the bonnet, the symptom narrows it a long way.
Rapid clicking, dim or no dash lights. Not enough current to turn the engine. Battery, cables or connections, and in this climate that is the most common of the three by a wide margin.
One solid click, lights stay bright. Power is arriving and the starter is not doing its job.
Cranks strongly but will not fire. The starting system is fine. You have a fuel, spark or timing problem, which is a different diagnosis.
Started fine, died while driving, battery light on. The alternator stopped charging and the engine ran the battery flat. Jump it and it will die again.
Nothing at all, no lights, no click. A completely flat battery, a disconnected terminal, a main fuse, or a security fault.
One detail people forget to mention: how long it has been sitting, and whether it has been jump-started recently. Repeated deep discharge permanently damages a starting battery, and in a town where half the vehicles sit for half the year that is frequently the whole answer.
The tests that settle it
A load test measures the battery under real current draw rather than at rest. A charging test reads alternator output with the engine running and loads on. Voltage drop testing finds the corroded cable or poor ground that mimics both failures.
Resting voltage misleads constantly. A battery reading 12.4 volts sitting still can still collapse under the several hundred amps a starter pulls. A load test applies real current and watches what happens.
The charging test is the mirror image. Engine running, the alternator should hold roughly 13.8 to 14.4 volts. Switch on headlights, blower and rear demister and see whether it holds. An alternator that copes at idle and gives up under load is failing, even though a quick check calls it fine.
Voltage drop testing is what separates a diagnostician from a parts fitter. A corroded cable or a poor engine-to-chassis ground drops voltage on its way to the starter and produces exactly the symptoms of a dying battery. People replace the battery, then the starter, and the fault is a $12 cable end. In heat this extreme, terminals corrode quickly, so that matters more here than almost anywhere.

Sustained temperatures past 110°F evaporate electrolyte and accelerate internal corrosion, so a battery rated for five years commonly manages two or three here. Months of sitting unused does the rest of the damage.
Heat drives the chemistry inside a battery faster, including the reactions that destroy it: grid corrosion and water loss from the electrolyte. Under-bonnet temperatures run far above the air temperature outside, and the air temperature here is already extreme.
Sitting compounds it. A battery left discharged for months sulphates, and sulphation is largely permanent. For seasonal residents that is the usual story: the vehicle was fine in April, sat through the summer, and will not start in November.
Practical consequences:
- Test at three years, not five. A load test takes ten minutes.
- Fit a maintainer on anything that sits. It is cheaper than one battery.
- Keep terminals clean. Corrosion makes a healthy battery behave like a dying one.
- Short summer trips with the air conditioning running never fully recharge a battery.
- Replace on the test, not on a no-start. A planned battery happens in your driveway.
Jump-starting without doing damage
Positive to positive, then the good battery’s negative to an unpainted metal ground on the dead vehicle, never to the dead battery’s negative post. A charging battery off-gasses hydrogen, and the last connection is the one that sparks.
The order exists because a lead-acid battery vents hydrogen when charged hard.
- Both vehicles off, parked close but not touching.
- Red to the dead battery's positive terminal.
- Red to the good battery's positive terminal.
- Black to the good battery's negative terminal.
- Black to bare unpainted metal on the dead vehicle's engine or chassis, away from the battery. This is the connection that can spark, which is why it belongs away from the gas.
- Start the good vehicle, wait a few minutes, then try the dead one.
- Disconnect in reverse order.
Do not jump a battery that is visibly swollen, cracked or leaking. And if it starts then dies as soon as the leads come off, the alternator is not charging, and driving anywhere is a gamble measured in minutes.
Mobile battery replacement and alternator replacement in Havasu
Fitted, a battery typically runs $180 to $400, an alternator $400 to $900 and a starter $350 to $800. On the last two, access drives the labour more than the part price does.
Battery, $180-$400. The spread is group size and chemistry. AGM costs more and tolerates heat better, which is worth real money here. Many newer vehicles need the new battery registered to the charging system with a scan tool; skipping that shortens its life, and it is a fair question to ask.
Alternator, $400-$900. Some sit at the top of the engine and take under an hour; others are underneath, behind a bracket, with the belt routed around half the accessories.
Starter, $350-$800. Same story. A few are twenty minutes, some need the intake manifold off.

At the ramp, the storage yard or the house
A no-start is the easiest work a mobile mechanic does, because the vehicle is stationary by definition. What changes the job is the location and whether the surface is safe to work on.
Most no-start calls are straightforward: the tests are quick, the parts are common, and the vehicle is not going anywhere.
Location changes the details. A driveway or a flat storage space is ideal. A launch ramp car park on a Saturday is workable and busy. A highway shoulder toward Parker is where judgement comes in, and the usual right answer is a short tow somewhere safer first.
If the vehicle is in a storage yard, check the access arrangements before booking: gate codes and opening hours have stranded more than one appointment. Starting, deep-cycle and dual-purpose batteries are not the same
A starting battery delivers a large current briefly and hates being deeply discharged. A deep-cycle battery tolerates discharge and delivers less cranking current. Using the wrong type, or wiring them together carelessly, shortens the life of both.
In a town full of boats and motorhomes this distinction matters more than it does almost anywhere, and it is routinely got wrong.
Starting batteries. Thin plates, large surface area, built to deliver several hundred amps for a few seconds. Discharging one deeply damages it permanently, which is why a car battery used to run accessories for an afternoon is often finished.
Deep-cycle batteries. Thicker plates, built to be discharged and recharged repeatedly. They deliver less cranking current, so a deep-cycle battery is a poor choice for starting a large engine on its own.
Dual-purpose. A compromise that does both adequately and neither exceptionally. Common on boats, and reasonable where space allows only one.
The wiring matters too. House and starting banks should be separated by an isolator or a switch, so that running the stereo at anchor or the lights in a motorhome cannot leave you unable to start the engine. A failed isolator is a common cause of a mysterious dead starting battery.
When you call about a no-start, say what kind of vehicle it is and how many batteries it has. A motorhome with two banks and an isolator is a different diagnosis from a car with one battery.
What a maintainer actually does over a Havasu summer
A battery maintainer holds a parked battery at full charge with a small regulated current, which prevents the sulphation that permanently destroys capacity. It costs less than one battery and it is the single best return on a stored vehicle.
If you take one piece of maintenance advice as a seasonal owner here, this is it.
A lead-acid battery self-discharges on its own, and heat accelerates that. As it sits partly discharged, lead sulphate crystals form on the plates and gradually harden. That process is sulphation, and past a point it is permanent: the battery will not hold a charge no matter how long you leave it on a charger.
A maintainer prevents it by holding the battery at full charge with a small regulated current, switching itself down when the battery is full. This is not the same as an old-fashioned trickle charger, which can overcharge and boil off electrolyte.
Practicalities. One maintainer per bank; a motorhome usually has two. Mains power at the storage location is the usual obstacle, and solar maintainers exist for exactly that reason. Check the connections are clean before you leave, because a maintainer on a corroded terminal is doing nothing.
If there is no power at all. Disconnecting the negative terminal removes the parasitic draw and slows the decline, though it does not stop self-discharge. Better than nothing, and materially worse than a maintainer.
The arithmetic is simple. A maintainer costs a fraction of one battery, and it decides whether you come back in October to a vehicle that starts.
